An Indian-born Swiss politician and a member of the National Council of Switzerland,Niklaus-Samuel Gugger has said that the recently signed EFTA has opened new opportunities for India and Switzerland and will help provide skills and jobs to Indians.
“EFTA happened after 16 years. It is a unique free trade agreement between four counties that means Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway. It opens a lot of opportunities for India and Switzerland,” Gugger told ET during his recent visit to India.
“There can be cooperation in healthcare, med care, steel sector and aviation. Switzerland’s dual education system that focuses on skills will be beneficial to India,” added Gugger.

On March 10, 2024, India-European Free Trade Association signed a Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). Switzerland is the largest trading partner of India among EFTA countries, followed by Norway. With the aim to increase the stock of foreign direct investments by USD 100 billion in India in the next 15 years, EFTA has committed to promote investments and to facilitate the generation of 1 million direct employment in India, through such investments.
